 Module Title
DESIGN SKILLS

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME

Molly Goggin

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I think I’ve developed my skill of looking at design and being aware of people I should know about. Although I haven’t contacted them that’s because for me I haven’t needed to. But I know that I don’t really need a reason, I should just ask a question and see if I get a reply.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

This module has allowed me to get to know what kind of designer I am and what I like. Which is stuff like screen-printing, with the manifesto. Having that manifesto is really helpful because it will be interesting if I want to change the points along the way of this course.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I like to find designers online but don’t use blogs, which I want to start to do properly. However I finding them online like Instagram and such platforms means they’re normally quite easy to contact, which I do want to do more often.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I still haven’t really gotten in contact with designers, which I need to learn to do. I think I’m a bit scared of the idea of it, but shouldn’t be because if they don’t reply, that’s all that happens. It’s not the end of the world.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Contact professionals
Keep up to date with blogs
Go to more exhibitions and talks
Go to design houses and invite myself in
Think about my personal professional practise more than I have

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Pressision Visit

The pressision visit was really interesting and helpful. I find the big machines that can print these amazing images in seconds so interesting so I knew i would enjoy the trip. I found the methods of printing they had to be a lot more than I thought. I think I learned a lot, however I didn't take notes because  we were walking around, so now I can't remember those methods.

Studio Brief 2, Design Decisions

I always go for quite simple clean looking design when I am designing something. For the It's up to you brief, i felt that using just type and a stroke of colour would be appropriate because that is my style personal to me.

I chose Orator Std typeface for the font because I have used it in the past and know I really liked it. It's an uppercase typeface which I find easier to read and it also goes with the clean simple look.

I also like to use lines of colour to introduce colour and not overuse it. I think the lines of colour organise the type and make your eyes look at what I want them to look at.

Next year I do want to start doing more interesting and detailed work because I love detailed work and when I paint, I always go for the most difficult and textured images, I want to incorporate that in my work.

PPP Presentation

My presentation was simply about the design that  I like, the design I create and what else I like or do that isn't to do with graphics. I hope over the summer I can get back into painting because it is a skill I don't want to lose and hopefully could incorporate in longer briefs next year.
I think my presentation to the class went well, I felt quite confident about standing up and talking, this year has definitely taught me how to present, which I'm really glad about.

Studio Brief 2, Inspiration

I'm a fan of Mr Bingo, and like the Idea of sending postcards around.

So I thought I'd make my pack postcard  size so they could be sent around. However for now I have designed them so they don't really look like postcards, and rather big business cards. I would send these off as a set anyway so would package them differently to send them.

Studio Brief 2, Its up to you

I don't want to brand myself properly at all right now, because I am no where near close to being a real designer I feel. I have so much to learn still, it doesn't seem right to give myself a brand people should know me by.

So I've decided to create a small pack of postcards that show what kind of person and designer I am.
I used the points from the manifesto because I think they show me well.

I always like to play on words or try to have a catchy slogan if text is involved with my designs. Luckily my name is quite a good one and I get called Molly Gogg a lot. My twitter and Instagram are called this, however I worry it sounds a bit offensive. So I made so it is my nickname, Molly Gogg but also my whole name, it can read like - Molly Gogg in Graphic Design, or Molly Goggin Graphic Design.

Each postcard has the Molly Goggin Graphic design on one side and an aspect of my design process,

Blogs
Be yourself,  try not to follow
Criticism , I can take it
Hands on - try not to forget the hand rendered
Working together - I can do it

Small business card size I think look quite good, but they're more of a set than separate things.

Miss prints, as always

Time Managment

Use lists

Using lists really help structure your day, and time.
I tend to use lists when I feel I have so much work to do I need to visualise it in order to understand it.
I think I should start using lists at the beginning of briefs rather at the end, so I manage my time better throughout the brief
